24: The Fight of Worship

9 03 2009

Ephesians 6:10-12 (NIV): Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Maybe you’ve watched it, have seen a preview, or have heard peers talking about the non-stop action drama “24”. It centers around one man, Jack Bauer, who is the president’s and few other officials’ trusted friend and confidant. As the on screen clock ticks down for the hour/day Jack is fighting, negotiating, hiding, running, plotting, and doing whatever it takes for the ultimate good of the country. He barely sleeps. Ironically, although not surprisingly, he is misunderstood by most of the people he is fighting for. No, I’m not encouraging you to watch “24” but to live 24/7 for God.

With the pressures of work or school or both, the challenges of the single life or the marital relationship, the duties of raising kids or being a role model, and the expectations of others and personal disappointment who has the time or energy for deep, consistent communion with God? The knowledge of its importance gives way to fatigue and the desire to escape it all. As exciting as the Jack and his show may be, most of us wouldn’t want/don’t want the constant conflict and turmoil. Yet we are in a 24/7 “pressure cooker” of eternal proportions.

The unseen enemy of our lives, Satan and his minions, do their best to keep us entangled with the worries and excitement of this life while making time with God and living for God appear burdensome and even scary. The truth is heart felt prayer to God and a Holy Spirit lead reading and study of the Bible in a quest to know Jesus Christ better it the nucleus of success and victory. It is at the core of a godly lifestyle.

Jesus, who is not only Savior and Lord but also our Example, was under constant bombardment. He had the weight of the world on His shoulders, our eternal destiny in the balance. Yet, Jesus was always victorious because He fought for time with His Father in Heaven. Late in the evening or early in the morning He would be found pouring out His heart to the Father or quietly listening for instructions for the day. Occasionally, He would converse with the Father all night. The reward? Power and Strength for Victory, and Love for family, friend, foe, and frienemies. The fight of worship begins… NOW!

Note: Worship is a life of devotion. Devotion is defined in the The American Heritage® Dictionary as ardent, often selfless affection and dedication, as to a person or principle. Religious ardor or zeal; piety. An act of religious observance or prayer, especially when private.

Resolutions Revisited

1 03 2009

Phillippians 3:13-14 (NIV): Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I know it’s March and we’re well into the year now but resolutions are not just about starting the year right. They are about continuing in the right track and finishing the year strong. For the believer it’s about letting Jesus -cooperating with Him- fix our secret (and not so secret) messes. It’s about gaining victory over secret places of unkempt rooms and mess filled hearts.

My office at church and at home were in need of some major organization. Yet on the surface, in the sanctuary and in my living room, everything looked good. Lurking behind closed doors, however, was so much clutter that I didn’t not want to deal with it.

So Christ comes and goes past the nice organized things to deal with the hidden distractions. There are those areas in our lives that we can’t seem to get over or get right. We wallow in depression and self-pity. Or we try to ignore the reality that we cannot handle it.

We are to partner with Jesus Christ and give Him the leading role. Take Him to the place of clutter, weakness, and defeat and allow Him to show you what to do. Consult the Bible for God’s direction and listen to the Holy Spirit (which do not contradict). Then watch the Savior Creator work in you and through you to press toward the mark of victorious living in God.

Surgical Waiting Room

24 02 2009

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV): Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Have you ever prayed for God to fix or save your friend, spouse, a son or daughter, coworker or neighbor? Are you currently pleading with the Lord about someone? How many times have you tried to do what only God can do?

Well, right now, as I am writing this, I am in a surgical waiting room. My 18-month-old son is being operated on or has just finished. He’s getting a hernia repaired. Before he went in, I played with him, prayed with him, talked with him, hugged and kissed him, and changed his diaper. I felt for the hernia to make sure they were going to operate on the correct side. Then I signed the consent forms. What I didn’t do was attempt to remove the problem myself. Why? I am not qualified.

When we pray for God to work in the lives of others, we must let God be God. So often we will try to force feed the person(s) concerned with information or attempt to control the situation(s). We lean more on our own understanding, our own know how. We don’t acknowledge (give credit) to God and His unique ability to touch hearts and transform lives.

Trusting the Lord means to 1) be a witness in the way we work, play, talk, and interact and 2) sign the consent forms via prayer, letting God do what only He can – change mindsets and world views.

The Destination is Real

18 02 2009

John 14:2-3 (NIV): In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

For to many of us this world is it. Oh we talk about Heaven. Maybe we even sing about heaven. But if and when we are honest with ourselves Heaven is not all that real to us. As pain and tragedy knock on our doors we then long for that place of no more tears, heartache, and death. We then long for, hunger for a sin-free world.

When Jesus would discuss the Kingdom of Heaven, His disciples would picture material wealth and political power and supremacy over their Roman oppressors. What may surprise you is that Jesus was talking about something concrete. Of course, it was not what the disciples had in mind. The Savior was and is pointing His followers to His tangible reality. Let me explain.

His Father’s house is real with actual rooms. If it wasn’t/isn’t real Jesus would have told us so. He is designing your room and mine. (I like to think of them as penthouses – a cross between rooms and mansions.) This house of God is located in the city limits of New Jerusalem (on the planet called Heaven- perhaps Heaven is a planet). Jesus knew because He built it.

Jesus is seeking to prepare our hearts and minds to live in face to face fellowship with Himself. As we daily surrender our plans, problems, and personal opinions to Him we ready ourselves for His tangible, tear-free reality.

Fielding Frustration

11 02 2009

2 Timothy 4:1-2 (NIV): In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

I’m at one of those places again. Moving forward. Usually when that happens something comes up. A monkey wrench. A show stopper. A day destroyer. A week killer. (At the risk of overkill, I’ll move on.) But I know you’ve been there.

It was Sunday night and my kids had runny noses and my son appeared to have a slight fever. I was getting perturbed because I was pretty sure that one or both of my kids would have to stay home from daycare for part of the week. Translation: pastor daddy is staying home and my week is shot. Then my loving wife began to remind me to claim the promises of God. Hearing your own words can be annoying and difficult to apply especially when emotions are rising. If you’re like me, the road to victory/success always seems to be arrayed with heartbreak, grief, or annoyances like construction zones on the freeway.

It is then – it is right now – when the practicing the principles of God’s word counts. Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others is a must for believers. Likewise, preaching to ourselves (literally), correcting ourselves, and encouraging ourselves in the Lord is also a must. Frustration takes over when we lose faith in the fact that God is in control, that Jesus is our Advocate, the Holy Spirit our Helper, and that God’s word is true. Reading, memorizing, quoting, believing the Bible and living by the promises found in them changes the way we think and takes frustration out of play.

Bottom line: We are to live for God when it is easy or popular (in season) and when it is not (out of season). This always leads to true victory.

Note: Thankfully, I claimed God’s promises that night and preached to myself that this is what the journey is about. That changed my outlook for the better. Good thing… my kids have been home with me from Sunday until now.

Unsure but Certain

1 02 2009

James 1:5 (NIV): If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

At every junction in His ministry, Jesus based His life and mission on the word of God. When in Gethsemane the weight of the world’s sin blocked His connection with the Father and the hope of resurrection, yet He yielded to the will and word of God found in Scripture. After Jesus rose from the dead, He did not only show the disciples His hands and feet, He gave them a review of Scripture – a bible study. (See Luke 24.) Strange, right? Even so, Jesus gave them and us the foundation of certainty and assurance – the word of God (Bible) and the Word of God (Himself, Jesus Christ).

When we’re not sure how things will turn out or of our next few steps we can be certain in God who made Heaven and Earth. James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom that person should ask God who gives generously no matter your background. The main thing is to ask in faith (see verse 6.) That is faith in God and faith in His word. This wisdom from God will give us what we need to navigate through unsure feelings and uncertain times. When we believe the Bible and let it guide our lives then we demonstrate our faith in God.

So when the economy is dead and livelihoods are in jeopardy or have been lost, hope in God and His coming kingdom. Be certain that His word and Word are true. …And that He loves and cares for you.

Note: I’m not really sure how this will turn out – this devotional website. Yet I am certain God wants me to write. For those who have been gracious enough to receive my email devotionals this past year, these thoughts will have a similar feel. What I’m not sure about is the form they will take (like Monday’s Message) or the frequency (daily or weekly). Whatever the case, the overall focus will be living in Christ’s victory. Also from time to time I will post a video or podcast of a message that I’ve put together that I believe and pray will encourage you.

Coming February!
