Unsure but Certain

1 02 2009

James 1:5 (NIV): If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

At every junction in His ministry, Jesus based His life and mission on the word of God. When in Gethsemane the weight of the world’s sin blocked His connection with the Father and the hope of resurrection, yet He yielded to the will and word of God found in Scripture. After Jesus rose from the dead, He did not only show the disciples His hands and feet, He gave them a review of Scripture – a bible study. (See Luke 24.) Strange, right? Even so, Jesus gave them and us the foundation of certainty and assurance – the word of God (Bible) and the Word of God (Himself, Jesus Christ).

When we’re not sure how things will turn out or of our next few steps we can be certain in God who made Heaven and Earth. James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom that person should ask God who gives generously no matter your background. The main thing is to ask in faith (see verse 6.) That is faith in God and faith in His word. This wisdom from God will give us what we need to navigate through unsure feelings and uncertain times. When we believe the Bible and let it guide our lives then we demonstrate our faith in God.

So when the economy is dead and livelihoods are in jeopardy or have been lost, hope in God and His coming kingdom. Be certain that His word and Word are true. …And that He loves and cares for you.

Note: I’m not really sure how this will turn out – this devotional website. Yet I am certain God wants me to write. For those who have been gracious enough to receive my email devotionals this past year, these thoughts will have a similar feel. What I’m not sure about is the form they will take (like Monday’s Message) or the frequency (daily or weekly). Whatever the case, the overall focus will be living in Christ’s victory. Also from time to time I will post a video or podcast of a message that I’ve put together that I believe and pray will encourage you.
